LISTENING SESSION for CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

We want to hear your hopes and dreams for children’s ministry at St. Matthew’s. Your insights and ideas are invaluable as we discern the future of this important ministry, consider our staffing needs, and explore ways to extend our hospitality to new families moving into our community.

OFFICE CLOSED FOR LABOR DAY

Why does the U.S. celebrate Labor Day instead of Workers’ Day? There's a very complex history there that has to do with the relationship between Labor Day and May Day. Only the United States and Canada observe Labor Day, which falls on the first Monday of September. This distinguishes them from the rest of the world, where Workers’ Day typically coincides with May Day, observed on May 1. In May of 1886, the Haymarket Affair unfolded in Chicago. This involved contentious and often violent confrontations between protesting workers, who demanded shorter working hours, and their employers and the police. These clashes led to considerable deaths and even the execution of some labor leaders who were charged with somehow being behind a deadly terrorist bombing at a place in Chicago called the Haymarket. In the years after the Haymarket Affair, labor leaders in the U.S. advocated for May Day to become Workers’ Day. That effort took off internationally but not here in the United States. This is partly because U.S. government officials were wary of establishing a national holiday that commemorates the workers who had been killed in these clashes. Holding the holiday in September also aligned with how it was already being celebrated in some parts of the country. https://www.colorado.edu/today/2023/08/31/what-labor-day-and-why-do-we-celebrate-it

LET'S GO STROLLING thru KUBOTA GARDEN

Kubota Garden combines Japanese garden design with native Northwest plants. The garden was started in 1927 by Fujitaro Kubota, a Japanese immigrant and skilled landscaper. He created a peaceful setting with hills, streams, ponds, and waterfalls, blending Japanese techniques with native plants. After being released from internment during WWII, Kubota continued to develop the garden, which grew to 20 acres. In 1981, the core of the garden was named a Historic Landmark, and in 1987, the City of Seattle purchased the garden to preserve it. Our tour guide will be Susan Cook, a dedicated volunteer, has been helping maintain the garden for many years. Every Tuesday morning, she assists the gardeners with various tasks to keep the garden beautiful. Susan is also working on a special project to document the lifecycle of each maple species in the garden, contributing to the preservation and understanding of this unique landscape.

Faith in Public Life
Wednesdays via Zoom, Sept 18 - Oct 30
Register (at the bottom of the page)

In preparation for our election and the times we find ourselves in, what does it mean for us to be Church in today’s world? Through a variety of voices and disciplines, we’ll explore what it means to be people of faith in today’s public life, growing in our awareness of how we’ve been formed in our culture and how we’re being called into new places. Guest-Faculty: Each week we'll learn alongside guest-faculty from different disciplines and places in the public sphere, including: Dr. Reggie Williams, author of Bonhoeffer’s Black Jesus Dr. Grace Ji-Sun Kim, author of When God Became White Stacy Kitahata, Executive Director, Holden Village Rev. Terry Kyllo, Executive Director of Paths to Understanding Dr. Justin Latterell, Senior Fellow at Emory University's Center for the Study of Law & Religion Fred Oduyoye, from Reachable Reconciliation Ministries What Can I Expect? You can expect a course designed to be in conversation with where you are as a lay Christian leader and learner. The common thread through the various weekly presents will be to engage various questions, including: How do the various aspects of our life of faith (i.e our understanding of God, church, and world) intersect with our life in society and culture? · For instance, in conversation with Reggie Williams, an African American Bonhoeffer scholar, how was Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s experience at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, NY was formative for his public witness as a Christian? · With Grace Ji-Sun Kim, a Korean theologian, we’ll ask how our understandings of God are often projections of our own bias and influence how we live as church today. · With Stacy Kitahata, Terry Kyllo, and Fred Oduyoye, we’ll explore how to live faithfully into the diversity of the world in a way that gives witness to a life of discipleship.
